Long time arch rival Ateneo De Manila Blue Eagles and De la Salle University Lady Spikers meet once more for a match-up on the second round of elimination of the UAAP Women's Volleyball Season 84. The Blue Eagles are looking forward to beating La Salle to increase the chance to enter the Final Four, on the other hand, La Salle is aiming to win the match to stay on the second spot behind National University and secure a twice to beat advantage.
The match between the two universities lasted for more than two hours at the Mall of Asia Arena. Ateneo started strong, winning the first set of the match 25-19. La Salle bounced back on the second set 25-18, with Dela Cruz and Malaluan helping the team out. Faith Nisperos and the blue eagles on the other hand worked double time to claim the third set 25-20. In the fourth set, La Salle collaborated early on to score points to have a 10 point lead but Ateneo's heart strong mantra pushed the set to close score but fell short, 25-22 in favor of La Salle. Both teams were head to head on the fifth and final set but crucial errors from Ateneo helped La Salle win the game. The Lady Spikers snatched the fifth 15-12. La Salle is now in second spot while Ateneo is still in fourth. La Salle now has a 10-3 win-loss record while Ateneo drops with 7-6.
Four players from La Salle scored double digits: Malaluan and Soreño with 17 apiece, Dela Cruz contributed 14, and Gagate with 12. This marks the team captain Dela Cruz' UAAP '84 highest output so far. She was hailed as the best player of the game.
Moreover, three Blue Eagles were in double digit scores: Nisperos with 29 big points, Raagas scored 17 while Gandler had 10.
The Taft vs Katipunan match swept the trending list on Tuesday afternoon. Almost all the players had a spot on the list and it was a hot topic online.
The UAAP Women's Volleyball elimination round will end on Thursday, June 9. The top 4 or the Final Four teams will advance to the semi-final rounds. However, if National University, which is now at 13-0, ends the elimination undefeated, they will go straight to the Finals and there would be a step-ladder match between the 2nd - 4th ranked teams.
