After the slapping incident during the Academy Awards ceremony last Sunday, Will Smith posted his apologies to Chris Rock on his Instagram account, on Monday, saying his behaviors were “unacceptable and inexcusable.
“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong...” Smith wrote in his post.
The unexpected turn of events happened prior to announcing the Best Actor award, which the actor won, after Rock made a joke about her wife, Jada Pinkett Smith for her bald head, referring to her as “G.I. Jane”.
“Jokes at my expense are part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear, and I reacted emotionally,” Smith said.
The actor’s wife has openly talked in the past that she suffers from alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss. Smith left the crowd and the national TV astounded when he went on stage and slapped the comedian. The Oscars then bleeped the next scenes, but the actor was caught shouting “keep my wife’s name out of your f***** mouth” when he returned to his seat.
When the actor accepted his first Oscars of his career, he apologized to the Academy and his fellow nominees. He then referenced, in tears, his Oscar-winning role “Richard”, calling him “a fierce defender of his family.”
“Art imitates life. I look like the crazy father, just like they said about Richard Williams,” Smith said. “But love will make you do crazy things.”
He also mentioned that he spoke to his fellow nominee, Denzel Washington during the commercial break.
“At your highest moment, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you” he said as he recalled his co-actor’s words.
“I am a work in progress.” Smith said as he ended his public apology.
