Oh no, this is really devastating and it seems like 2020 curses are endless and unbeatable!
We didn’t see it coming, and now typhoon Ulysses has brought back the horrors of typhoon Ondoy in 2009 as massive rainfall and severe flooding continue to ravage the Metro and nearby towns.
As of 11 a.m., the water level in Marikina River rose to 22 meters—a meter away from the 23 meters above sea level reached when Ondoy ravaged the city and nearby towns 11 years ago.
Marikina residents have been used to flooding for years, but still tropical storm Ulysses managed to shock everyone as hundreds of residents were forced to flee their homes due to the continuous rising of the river’s water level. The local government also deployed rescue boats to extricate stranded residents.
Many are stranded on top of their roofs and seek immediate rescue and help from the authorities as their homes were literally submerged in water.
Even Marikina City Mayor Marcy Teodoro had to cross through floodwater to help in disaster response efforts in the city.
In an earlier interview with radio DZBB, Teodoro said: "Nakakatakot dahil parang Ondoy ang karanasan namin dito, dahil 'yung Ondoy, ganito rin nangyari – habang natutulog ang lahat, biglang tumaas ang ilog,"
According to PAGASA, Typhoon Ulysses will continue to trigger moderate to heavy rains until this afternoon in Metro Manila and some part of Luzon island.
Ulysses is moving west-northwest at a slightly faster 25 kilometers per hour (km/h) from the previous 20 km/h.
